Palm Springs, CA – For decades, John Delavecchio has been a quiet hero in the world of animal rescue — devoting his life to rehabilitating dogs no one else would take. But now, after surviving a devastating car crash, the man who has always put animals first is in need of help himself.

On July 17th, the longtime Palm Springs Animal Shelter volunteer and founder of Sunset Rescue Ranch was airlifted to a Level One Trauma Center after his vehicle rolled multiple times in a serious accident. Miraculously, he survived, though he sustained a fractured back and a concussion.

John’s story has inspired many. Known for taking in the most abused and traumatized animals, he patiently earned their trust, one wagging tail at a time. His selfless devotion often came at a personal cost — sacrificing financial stability and health insurance to keep his rescue running.

While John recovers at home, his wife Sara is doing everything she can to care for the dogs he loves. Thanks to a growing outpouring of community support, the couple is managing to provide for both the animals and themselves — at least for now.

The accident has left emotional scars, too. Tragically, a dog belonging to another volunteer lost its life in the crash. Even more troubling, the man believed responsible for the wreck has not been charged, despite a lengthy criminal record that includes multiple DUIs. That same individual is also suspected of stealing John’s wallet while he was hospitalized — racking up charges on both his personal and business credit cards.

Still, there is hope. Supporters are urging the local District Attorney to review the case, and in the meantime, they continue to rally around John with donations, shares, and messages of encouragement.

John has spent his life fighting for animals who had no voice. Now, his supporters say, it’s time for the rest of us to fight for him. Support John’s GoFundMe Fundraiser
